Cowboy's set list

They took the stage around 11:40 & played until 1:30.

1. Detroit City
2. Honeysuckle Blue
3. Build A Fire
4. Pre-Approved Pre-Denied
5. Hey Landlord (Meatloaf & Fishsticks)
6. Ain't Waiting On Tomorrow
7. Let Me Down
8. Let's Go Dancing
9. Tell Me A Story/Don't You Know That I Know That You Know
10. Jumpin' Jack Flash
11. Great American Bubble Factory
12. Which Jesus
13. Straight To Hell
14. Melina
15. Fly Me Courageous
16. Blues On Top Of Blues/Surfin' Bird
17. Leaving On A Jet Plane

Tell Me A Story (my working title) was a small minute long ditty that led into DYKTIKTYK. My highlights: Hey Landlord, Ain't Waiting On Tomorrow (I hope it winds up on a future album), Melina (for those that don't know, this is a Kathleen Turner Overdrive song which is Tim's other band) & Leaving On A Jet Plane.
I was hoping for The Hardest Part. According to Kevn..."I am working on a new verse for it."

Carlton: How did The Hardest Part sound in Alabama last Saturday?

Too many concerts in too few a days (plus I'm an old fart smile  who killed too many brain cells way back when) .......  I can't remember much about the song right now.  Guess you'll just have to listen to the recording when I get it posted and judge for yourself.

Couldn't agree more on all counts. I'm not sure if I've ever heard Hey Landlord live before, and the other was a new song for me and I loved it. I'd add one more highlight....Kevn's walk to the front of the stage to hang out with the audience during Fly Me. I've got a cool photo if somebody can tell me how to upload I will.

So speaking of, can somebody tell me where I can get some KTO music? Do they have a CD? Could find nothing on iTunes or eBay. And their myspace page doesn't have a link to purchase (the official KTO website shown on their myspace rerouts to DNC.com).

Re: Cowboy's set list

Carlton: I will patiently wait for you to get done with the recording. Thanks again for letting me hang out & enjoy the Delta Moon concert on Saturday with you & Sandy. With the time change, was it 4am before you returned home?

King: Even though it was acknowledged quite a few times by several different people, there was no official "Happy Birthday" sing-a-long like I wanted to happen. There was a nice lady at the merchandise table that did give him a birthday card with what appeared to be a gift card inside with a monetary amount on it. I have no idea what store it was for. Aren't you gonna comment on missing yet another performance of Melina? smile

Josh: I believe this was also my first Hey Landlord performance as well. I may have to look through King's LONG list of DVD's. I am hoping that mongoose_teddy will get some KTO music into your hands.

mongoose_teddy: Thanks for being so nice & getting that HUGE banner for me from the Cowboy's owner. I should measure it just to see how big it really is. I will see you Saturday at The Earl. Speaking of that, I need to make a post about it...

Not quite 4 but close enough to call it that.

I've never had much luck with mine in dark rooms ... you used to be able to turn the flash on and film with it, but something changed with it. Pictures look great, but the video sucketh (in dark rooms).

It's 10x better than what I had on my Treo though and still beats the pants off the iPhone I traded in for it smile

Hey thanks for the inuput!

I know this thread is about Cowboys but I just had to ask because I have a choice between to the two and really could just flip a coin but I was leaning towards the droid.

Hey Landlord has been peformed at least 6 times before Friday night at Cowboy's:

Kevn Kinney & Peter Buck, February 8, 1990 at Atlanta CD, Atlanta, Georgia
Kevn Kinney & Friends, March 3, 1990 at Roxy Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia - both performances appear on The Kevllection, Volume 8 (footage provided by Joe Richards)

Drivin' N' Cryin', April 22, 1991 at Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, Georgia - appears on The Kevllection, Volume 11 (footage provided by Joe Richards)

And these 3 shows that were filmed by King:
Kevn Kinney, July 27, 2007 at Big Bamboo Cafe, Hilton Head, South Carolina
Kevn Kinney's STAR, July 3, 2008 at Smith's Olde Bar, Atlanta, Georgia
Kevn Kinney, February 7, 2009 at Tokyo Alley, Macon, Georgia

They played it at the Front Page News show about a month ago. That must have been the first time in a while, because Kevn noted to me after the show, "How'd you like that Hey Landlord?"

This song used to be THE fan favorite in Kevn's solo act.

It just now seems weird that I haven't heard it in a dozen years or so . . . and I've never heard dnc play it.

Back in the old days, a guy from Panama City had a dnc/KK fan page named "Meatloaf and Fishsticks."

Mike: The memory isn't what it used to be & definitely nothing like Jon Kincaid's. I told him at Cowboy's that he NEEDS to be person that writes the official Drivin' N' Cryin' autobiography. He laughed at me. I told him I was serious. Who's in agreement with me? I do remember the site because I visited it quite often. I thought it was quite possibly the coolest DNC site. Now it sucks that it's been taken down. I guess it was maybe costing too much to keep it up & running. Please refresh my memory about the girl who had it.

Lew: Did you film/record this show? If so, has it been sent to King already? I am happy to see that you are still living in GA & didn't move to the Windy City.

Yep, I have some on my blackberry. Obviously the quality SUCKS, but it's worth seeing for a glimpse of the night.

Mike, I'll email what I have to you. The file format is *.3GP and will probably be unrecognized, but you can view with QuickTime player.

If there is a way to upload to this forum, somebody tell me and I will.

Hey Landlord first played by DNC at the "Rent Party" at the Metroplex in, I believe, March of 1986. Ken Schenk played a guitar solo Kevn still wishes had been replicated on the recorded version.....

This is the exact reason why you will be the author of the autobiography! I have no idea who Ken Schenk is/was.

It has been a while--personal commitments and priorities been elsewhere for awhile.  Plus, I'm not needed as much--thankfully!  I filled up the last ten years by egging the guys on toward a new album.  I'm mostly interested in discussing the aesthetic ups and downs of past records.  No call for that now that dnc's a working band again.  That's their business when they're working.

Though I'd love for someone to head over to the KK forum and tell us more about Mexican Dirtweed, or talk about the aesthetic ups and downs of past KK records and how "the fans" want more melodic, minimalist songs like "Bird"!

If I understood Kevn correctly as we talked while riding to Montgomery a couple weeks ago, the band made their debut at Shayni Rae's birthday party.  Initially I thought that the band was called Mexican Derby, which sounded like some sort of bazaar involving burros and the wearing of sombreros.  Upon being corrected on the name and questioned about my knowledge of Mexican dirtweed, I had to admit red-faced that my 4 years of higher learning at Greenville, South Carolina's world-famous university did not educate me in the arts of low-grade herbology.  I did, however, learn to play the oboe and was a pretty bitchin' euphonium player.

Ken Schenk was the guitarist in a great Atlanta band that were called 86 (no CDs available though there are a couple of clips up on Youtube), a band that also gave the world drummer Mac McNeilly (later of the Jesus Lizard). Ken moved out of town for a few years but is back in Atlanta and playing guitar for the revitalized legendary Atlanta band VieTnam.

It may not have actually been DNC at that point in the Rent Party (I believe Paul had been snuck out of whatever center the governmaent had placed him, played the DNC set, then went to sneak back in), so it may have been some combination of DNC, 86 and Uncle Green that performed that song. Uncle Green played "Drivin N Cryin" at this show becoming the first Atlanta band to cover that song. Ray Dafrico's Shades of Shame several years later also played a version live spelling out Shades Of Shame rather than DNC. But you knew that....
