Gonzo Rock: A Tribute To Wally Gates
The Earl
488 Flat Shoals Ave. SE
Atlanta GA 30316
404-522-3950
This Saturday March 20th
ONLY $7!!! Doors at 9pm
Musicians & friends that knew, worked, played, drank, sobered, loved, hated, sinned & prayed with Wally Gates will pay tribute to him in the best way they know how - a night of Wally Gates’ favorite music performed live by his friends.
The performance, where proceeds will directly benefit Wally’s son, Hunter Gates Furgalack, will feature tunes from ABBA to Zeppelin played by friends & former band mates of Wally’s. Mixing up musicians from local bands, including Stovall, Summer Dare, Duke Fame, Grumpy, The Mirthmakers & many others, three new bands have been formed to play from a list of Wally’s favorite music. Kathleen Turner Overdrive & Legend Of The Giant Squid, both bands that Gates served as bassist, will be contributing sets. Also performing will be life-long friend & former band pal, Dean Falcone (100 Faces), accompanying Trish Thompson, also a former collaborator of Gates.
Wally Gates, a respected and dedicated musician & producer, had made his mark in two local music scenes (New Haven, CT & Atlanta). During his life, he played, produced & assisted many rock, powerpop & alt-country bands in both cities, most notably 100 Faces (New Haven), Kathleen Turner Overdrive & Loudflower (Atlanta). He passed away in December 2009.

Yes, he will be. But, as he told me at Cowboy's, he "will not be performing". Has he changed his mind since Friday?

Pretty cool article in this week's Creative Loafing:
"The late Gates was one of those Atlanta musicians who remained under the radar but was influential on the '90s local scene through work with bands such as Loudflower & Kathleen Turner Overdrive. He loved power pop & British Invasion music, so his friends & associates promise wildly eclectic covers from those genres, surprise guests & unpredictable onstage collaborations."

KTO's set list:
Pretty Vacant (Sex Pistols)
Goin' Nowhere
Melina
Bloodstain
Big Mouth
Moral Nazi Parade
Chinese Rocks (Johnny Thunders)
Kevn said he was gonna spend all of April writing new songs. So don't expect any new DNC or solo dates to be added to the tour page. He also has a new band named Mexican Dirtweed. I almost laughed when he told me the name. So far they are only playing in & around NYC. Someone up there needs to go check them out & give us a report.

Hope he's not smoking it when he's writing those new songs. I would think he would prefer "a nice 'cognitive' high."
